Visualizing Internal Linking with the Crawl Tree Graph

Use the crawl tree and force-directed diagrams to find orphan pages, link depth issues and over-linked hub pages.
Why do internal links matter?
Crawlers discover pages by following links. A page that no other page links to may never be found, and a page buried many clicks from the home page is crawled less often. Internal linking is also how authority flows between your pages.
Visualise the structure
Jumpple Crawler can draw a site as a crawl tree graph, a directory tree graph and force-directed diagrams in 2D and 3D. The tree shows how many clicks each page is from the start URL, and the force-directed view clusters pages that link to each other, so isolated groups and over-connected hubs stand out.
Checks that use the same data
Several SEO Master rows read the link graph directly.
- Orphan Pages: crawled pages that no other crawled page links to, and sitemap URLs without internal links.
- Click Depth: pages more than 3 clicks from the start URL.
- Internal Linking: pages with fewer than 3 internal links.
- Anchor Text: links with empty or generic text such as click here.
What to do about orphan pages
For each orphan, decide whether the page should exist. If it should, link to it from a relevant hub page and from the navigation or footer when appropriate. If it should not, redirect it or remove it and take it out of the sitemap.
A caveat on crawl limits
A crawl with a URL limit only sees part of a large site. A page can look like an orphan simply because the page that links to it was not crawled. Raise the limit or compare against the XML sitemap before you draw conclusions.
